The PET exam consists of three papers:
Reading and Writing Paper
This paper takes 1 hour and 30 minutes. It carries 50% of the total marks for the exam.
Reading- Part 1:
Students read five short notices or messages and choose the correct answer. 5 questions - Part 2:
Students match the requirements of five people to five of eight short texts. 5 questions - Part 3:
Students read a text and decide whether ten statements are true or false. 10 questions - Part 4:
Students read a text and choose the correct answer from four options. 5 questions - Part 5:
Students choose the correct word to complete the spaces in a text. 10 questions
- Part 1:
Students complete the second sentence so that it means the same as the first sentence.
5 questions - Part 2:
Students write a short message including three pieces of information that they are given.
1 question - Part 3:
Students write an informal letter answering some questions

Students write a story using the title or the opening sentence given.

Listening Paper
This paper takes about 30 minutes and carries 25% of the total marks.

Students listen to seven short recordings and choose the correct pictures. 7 questions - Part 2:
Students listen to a talk or interview and choose the correct answers. 6 questions - Part 3:
Students listen to one speaker and complete some notes. 6 questions - Part 4:
Students listen to a conversation and decide if six statements are true or false. 6 questions
Speaking Paper
This paper takes about 10–12 minutes and carries 25% of the total marks.
Students do this part of the exam with one other candidate.

- Part 1:
Students answer the examiner’s questions about them, and listen to their partner answering questions.
Time: 2–3 minutes - Part 2:
With their partner, students discuss possible options for a situation they are given, and decide what is best.
Time: 2–3 minutes - Part 3:
Students talk about the photograph they are given, and listen to their partner describing a photograph.
Time: 3 minutes - Part 4:
Students have a conversation with their partner, continuing the theme from Part 3.
Time: 3 minutes
